ANN KEARON

The Artwork: We sit out the fun on the boat ramp, Murdunna 2013 This painting can only be a pale shadow of the reality – A still picture cannot portray the hurricane winds, the noise and the heat.

Ann Kearon was born in Harpenden, England in 1943. Always drawing as a child, she attended Northampton School of Art studying illustration and lettering, but she was always interested in painting. She taught for five years in high schools before raising a family and teaching only intermittently there after.

Before immigrating she exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and since living in Tasmania has exhibited in may local exhibitions and been represented in galleries throughout Tasmania. Wining the Eskleigh prize was a wonderful boost. Its very affirming to have people admire ones work.

KATY WOODROFFE

Artwork: A Precarious Balancing Act Tasmanian from diverse backgrounds recently united to stop a super trawler fishing in our waters. This piece of work reflects on the fragility of the ecosystem beneath our waters.

The Tasmanian Art Award at Eskleigh has always been my favourite art event. Like so many other emerging artists, its inclusive nature created the opportunity to exhibit work alongside better known artists in a friendly and welcoming environment. This was always such a positive and encouraging experience bringing together so many members of the local arts community. That feeling of vulnerable excitement of having those early pieces hung in such a lovely old home is something I will never forget. An then to actually win the award 10 years ago was like a dream come true. It gave me a tremendous boost in confidence and also the courage to enter more competitions and to exhibit in other places. Since that 2003 award I have had numerous solo exhibitions in Tasmania and have also exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo shows in Bulgaria and India. I have been selected for art residencies around the world including France, Spain, Greece and India. I now work full time as an artist in Hobart and have a solo exhibition at Colville Gallery, an international winners’ exhibition in Rome and an exhibition in Sydney all occurring in April this year.

HELEN WEEDING

Artwork: Cloud Study: Reflection (2013) This work is a continuation of a fascination and interest in wet atmospheric conditions. Clouds and fog hide and cover; are threatening yet a comfort; they are powerful yet benign.

She also worked for five years at QVMAG as the Art Education Officer. JUNKO GO

Artwork: In the ethers, there are mischievous imps who look for unsuspecting humans with a view to wreaking havoc. They cause us to misinterpret innocent statements as contentious remarks. Simple situations are somehow turned into complicated nightmares. Sometimes life becomes to be A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The winning of the Tasmanian Art Award two times in a row in 2001 and 2002 was virtually a starting point to establish myself as an artist. It created a certain credibility to start as it made people aware what’s I was doing. The general acceptance of art in Tasmania, in terms of visual art, is conservative and modest, and the landscape is an extremely dominant subject matter. In such a climate, this Award has contributed to foster a broader range of contemporary art and made people realize there’s a lot more to see. My work has since been strongly supported in Tasmania by Tasmanians. That is my source of confidence and commitment.

JACK JAMES

Artwork: Tessellated Pavement The Tessellated Pavement is a freak of nature created by water erosion on rock making an interesting pattern. It is situated just North of Eaglehawk Neck in Pirates Bay on the Forestier Penninsula.

Born in Victoria, Jack James was raised in the seaside village of Queensville, which could explain a penchant for water and boats. A working life in engineering may account for an eye for details. My interest in art flourished in 1995 following a back injury. Initial classes in pencil drawing were undertaken with Rosemary Hill in Launceston followed by basic oil principles with the late Greg Waddle in Hobart and Launceston. I have had success in various exhibitions including The Tasmanian Art Award at Eskleigh, which I was fortunate enough to win in 2008. This award gave my art career quite a boost with a number of enquiries and sales of painting at other venues. I have had paintings published in The Australian Art Magazine, paintings feature in private collections in England USA, New Zealand and all states of Australia.

MELISSA SMITH

Artwork: Red Shadow This work references the sea butterfly, currently under threat in increasing acidic southern ocean waters as a result of increased carbon emissions.

After being an Art educator in a senior role at Scotch Oakburn College in Launceston for 27 years I have recently taken on two new positions with Arts Tasmania, that of Roving Curator with Small Museums and Collections statewide and Program Officer for Public Art in the North/Northwest of Tasmania. My artistic practice has run concurrently with these roles for the last seventeen years, in many cases one inspiring the other. I have participated in solo and numerous group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. In 2004 and 2006 I won the Tasmanian Art Award at Eskleigh and have been a finalist in a number of major art prizes including the Fremantle Print Award and Silkcut Print Award, both in which my work has been acquired. My prints have also been represented in the Alice Prize, Hutchins Art Prize, Burnie Print Prize, Rena Ellen Jones Memorial Print Award, Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Banyule Works on Paper Art Award and the Outback Prize. In 2005 and 2011 I was selected by the Print Council of Australia to produce a commissioned Member’s print. My work is represented in Corporate, Tertiary, College and Private collections in Australia and overseas, and in the following Public galleries; National Gallery of Australia, ACT; Burnie Regional Gallery, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, TAS; Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Grafton Regional Gallery, Tweed River Regional Art Gallery, NSW and the Warrnambool Art Gallery, VIC. As
a consequence of being judged the winner of the Tasmanian Art Award at Tasmanian Art Award at Eskleigh twice, in consecutive years (no Award was presented in 2005) there was an increased acknowledgement of my work both locally and nationally, which in turn influenced my confidence and profile as a practicing artist in future years.

TOM SAMEK

Artwork: Dishes, Ewe, Cow

Tom was born in Prague and lived there until he was seventeen. As a young man he travelled extensively throughout Europe and lived in Germany, Switzerland and Austria before migrating to Australia in 1971. Although he has no formal art education his extensive resume, exhibition history and collections list indicate an artist of great diversity and immense skill. He describes himself as painter, sculptor, printmaker, mural artist; theatre set designer and film animator. Tom's gastronomic adventures and great appreciation for music are re-occurring motifs within his work. These offer the viewer a sensual metaphor where the every-day or inconsequential is transposed into complex universal themes. He is not afraid to touch the darker side of humanity, yet the easy nativity of his style belies the intensity of his subject. He is a master of the 'one liner', but like all good joke tellers, the punch line is only part of the fun, the other part is the individuality of style and masterful touch that we have come to know as Tom Samek. Tom has exhibited extensively since 1971 including numerous solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Tasmania, Austria and Darwin. His collections include The National Gallery of Australia, Auckland City Gallery, New Zealand, Artbank, South Australian Art Gallery and The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. He is also widely known for his public artworks including Royal Hobart Hospital ambulance entrance, Port Arthur Historic Site visitor information centre, and painted wood relief wall mural for Federation Concert Hall, Hobart.
